Moscow, September 8, 2011

On September 15, Dalian, China, will host the first BRICS Senior Officials meeting on scientific and technological cooperation. The decision to hold it was taken on Russia’s initiative at the 3rd summit of the BRICS in April this year in Sanya, China.

The meeting is to discuss ways of promoting cooperation in the format of BRICS in the science and high technology field, and the possibilities for joint implementation of innovation projects in priority areas of mutual interest. These include, first and foremost, microelectronics, nanotechnologies and materials, biotechnologies, energy efficiency technologies and renewable energy, and research on climate change. As mandated by the Heads of State and Government of the BRICS nations, the meeting will also consider establishing a working group on cooperation in the pharmaceutical industry.

A Russian delegation led by Deputy Minister of Education and Science Sergey Ivanets is going to China to attend the meeting.

The Senior Officials meeting will take place on the margins of the Summer Davos forum, to be held by the World Economic Forum and the Government of China on 14-16 September 2011 in Dalian. The heads of delegation of the BRICS countries will be invited to a meeting of the ministers of science, technology and innovation and to other activities of the Forum.
